Concrete for a City Built From Subdivisions

Homeowners looking for concrete contractors in St. George are living in one of the largest new cities in the country. Voters approved incorporation on October 12, 2019, with about 54 percent in favor, and after years in court the Louisiana Supreme Court upheld the vote 4 to 3 on April 26, 2024. Wikipedia puts the population at 86,316 across roughly 60 square miles of southeastern East Baton Rouge Parish. We pour and replace driveways, patios, decorative concrete, walks, steps and slabs across all of it.

Former suburbs, now neighborhoods

Much of St. George is made up of places that used to be listed separately by the Census Bureau. Shenandoah, Inniswold and Old Jefferson are now neighborhoods inside the city. Shenandoah alone counted 19,292 people in 2020, Old Jefferson had 7,339 and Inniswold 5,987. The original Village St. George subdivision, which gave the area its name, was built between 1956 and 1968.

That history means a wide range of concrete ages on the same drive to work. Driveways in the 1950s and 1960s sections have been in the ground more than half a century, and many are a patchwork of old panels and later patches. Homes from the 1980s and 1990s off Jefferson Highway and Siegen Lane often need aprons and garage-side panels replaced. Newer lots near Bayou Manchac tend to call for patios, extensions and walks.

Bounded by water on three sides

Wikipedia describes the city's edges as the Mississippi River on the west, Bayou Manchac on the south and the Amite River on the east. Along Highland Road the land slopes where a prairie terrace meets the river floodplain. Low ground and slow drainage are the reasons we fuss over grade. A patio that is level to the eye but holds a quarter inch of water will grow algae, stain and eventually lift at the edge. We set fall on every slab and tie it into the yard's drainage instead of fighting it.

Culverts go through St. George Engineering

Now that the city runs its own departments, driveway culverts are permitted through the St. George Engineering Department. Its application says plastic pipe (PVC or HDPE) may not be used under driveways, driveway pipe must be at least 24 feet long, a site plan showing the culvert is needed before the permit is issued, and the trench, bedding and grade must be inspected before backfill. It also asks for an 811 locate and a separate call to Baton Rouge Traffic Engineering for signal cables. If your new or wider driveway crosses a ditch, we work that permit into the schedule.

St. George Questions

Who issues culvert permits in St. George now?

The St. George Engineering Department. Its application requires a site plan, bars PVC and HDPE pipe under driveways, sets a 24-foot minimum for driveway pipe and calls for an inspection before the culvert is backfilled.

My driveway in Shenandoah is from the 1970s. Repair or replace?

If the panels are level and the cracks are tight, replacing a few sections can work. If the slab has tipped toward the garage, has wide cracks or holds water, a full tear-out with a new compacted base is usually the better choice.

Can you work within my subdivision's HOA rules?

Yes. Send the guidelines before the estimate, and we will plan driveway width, finish and color to fit them.
