Stone and Brick Looks, Poured in Place

Stamped concrete is a regular slab with a pattern pressed into the surface while it is still workable. Color goes into the mix and onto the top, textured mats imprint the pattern, and a sealer finishes the job. The result reads as slate, flagstone, cobble, brick or wood plank. In Baton Rouge it is a popular way to dress up a back patio, a front entry or a pool deck without the weeds, ants and shifting that come with loose pavers on soft ground.

Where it works best

  • Back patios, often with a border in a second color
  • Front entries and walks on brick homes, where a brick or stone pattern ties in
  • Pool decks, with a lighter color and grit in the sealer for footing
  • Driveway borders and aprons, adding pattern without stamping the whole drive

Stamped surfaces are slicker than broom finish when wet, and Baton Rouge gets a lot of rain. On steep walks, steps and full driveways we usually recommend a plain broom field with a stamped border instead.

How the color works

Most stamped jobs use two colors. The base color is integral, mixed into the concrete at the plant so it runs all the way through; a chip shows color, not gray. Before stamping, a release agent in a contrasting shade is spread on the surface. It keeps the mats from sticking and collects in the low spots of the pattern, giving the darker grout lines and variation that make it look like real stone. In strong sun, lighter base colors stay cooler underfoot, which matters on pool decks and west-facing patios.

Picking a pattern

Ashlar slate, a mix of rectangles in several sizes, is a common patio choice because it looks like cut stone. Random stone and flagstone patterns look more natural next to planting beds. Running bond or herringbone brick suits the many brick ranch houses around town. Wood plank works on smaller areas or next to a deck. At the estimate we bring pattern and color samples and talk through how the pattern lines up with doors, steps and walls.

Sealer in a humid climate

The sealer protects the color and keeps stains from soaking in, and it takes the most wear. In our climate it has to be applied when the slab is dry and the weather cooperates; sealer rolled over damp concrete can trap moisture and turn cloudy. We pour stamped work on a compacted base, place control joints along pattern lines where they blend in, and seal after the concrete has cured. Plan on resealing every few years, sooner in walking paths and around pools.

Overlay or new slab

A sound, level slab can sometimes take a stamped overlay, a thin patterned layer bonded to the old concrete, instead of a full tear-out. HomeGuide's resurfacing guide lists stamped overlays at $7 to $15 a square foot for a single pattern and $15 to $20 for complex designs. An overlay cannot fix a slab that has sunk or cracked through from moving clay; those cracks will come back through the new surface. In that case a new stamped slab is the better spend.

Keeping it looking right

Sweep and rinse often, and clean up grease, leaves and pool chemicals before they stain. Keep sprinklers and downspouts from soaking the same spot day after day. When water stops beading on the surface or the color looks flat, it is time to reseal.

Stamped Concrete Questions

Will stamped concrete crack?

All concrete cracks somewhere. Stamped slabs get control joints just like plain slabs, and we place them along pattern lines so the cracks follow the design.

Is stamped concrete slippery around a pool?

Sealed stamped concrete is slicker when wet than a broom finish. A textured pattern and anti-slip grit in the sealer help a lot on pool decks, steps and walks.

How often does it need sealing?

Every few years on most patios, sooner on walking paths and pool decks. Water soaking in instead of beading, or color that looks dull, means it is due.

Can my existing patio be stamped?

If it is sound and level, a stamped overlay may work. HomeGuide lists overlays at $7 to $15 a square foot for a single pattern. A slab that has sunk or cracked through should be replaced.

Stamped concrete or pavers?

Stamped concrete is one continuous slab with no sand joints for weeds or ants and no units to shift on soft ground. Pavers can be lifted and relaid one at a time. Price both for the same area and choose the trade-off that suits you.
