Walks and Steps You Do Not Have to Watch
Sidewalks and steps are where tired concrete becomes a safety problem. A walk panel lifted an inch by a tree root catches toes. A front stoop that settles pulls away from the house and lets rain run toward the slab foundation. Steps with chipped noses and uneven risers trip people, especially when wet. Baton Rouge has many homes from the 1950s through the 1970s, 46.8 percent of its housing by Point2Homes' Census summary, so many front walks and stoops here are more than 45 years old.
What usually goes wrong
- Roots. Live oaks and other large trees send roots under walks and lift panels into ridges.
- Clay. Walks are thin, so swelling and shrinking clay tilts them more easily than thicker slabs.
- Water. Downspouts that empty onto a walk or stoop wash out the soil beneath and leave hollow spots.
- Age. Older walks were often poured thin on little or no base, with joints spaced far apart.
Warning signs
- Ridges or drops between panels
- A stoop leaning toward or away from the house
- A gap between the top step and the threshold
- Chipped, rounded or broken step edges
- Risers of different heights
- Water standing on the walk after rain
Rebuilding a walk
The old panels come out and soft soil is removed. A base is compacted, and the forms get a slight cross-slope so rain sheds into the lawn instead of sitting on the walk. HomeGuide's sidewalk guide notes most walkways are 4 to 6 inches thick, thicker for heavy traffic. We pour, broom finish and tool joints at even spacing. If a tree root caused the damage, we talk through the options before pouring, since a new walk over the same root will lift again. Sometimes the best answer is a slight reroute around the tree.
Stoops and steps
Poured steps are built in place to meet your door threshold and the walk below. Every riser should be the same height and every tread the same depth, or people misstep. The top landing needs room to stand while a storm door swings open. A heavy stoop on loose fill will tilt, so we check what is under the old steps before designing new ones. On some homes, precast steps are an option, and HomeGuide's steps guide prices them below poured steps; we can quote both.
Rails and the public walk
Steps with more than two risers are safer with a handrail, especially in the rain. When we pour new steps we can set anchors in the fresh concrete so the rail bolts down solidly. A walk that runs along the street may sit in the public right-of-way rather than on your lot, so we check before quoting that section.
Care
Keep downspouts discharging past walks and stoops. Fill hairline cracks early so water does not wash out the base. Reseal every few years, and if a root starts lifting a panel, call before it becomes a trip edge.

Sidewalks & Steps Questions
How much does a new sidewalk cost?
HomeGuide's sidewalk guide lists new walks at $7 to $17 a square foot, or $28 to $68 a linear foot for a 4-foot-wide path. Tear-out, roots and access change the total, so the measured quote is your price.
Should I repair or replace my front steps?
Chipped edges on a solid set of steps can sometimes be repaired; HomeGuide lists step repair at $300 to $800. Steps that have tilted, pulled away from the house or have uneven risers are usually better replaced.
A tree root lifted my walk. Will a new walk last?
Not if it goes back over the same root. We talk through options such as rerouting the walk or changing its shape before pouring.
Can you add a handrail?
Yes. With new steps we set anchors in the fresh concrete. On existing steps we look at whether the edge is solid enough to hold one.
